The past few weeks have been heartbreaking, discomforting and mentally exhausting. And everything I’m feeling pales in comparison to the deep pain being felt by the Black community. A community that includes people who are a part of our VMS family – colleagues, nurses, patients, customers and so many others. A community that for far too long has suffered from appalling racial injustice in this country.
Like so many of you, I feel a profound sense of sadness and anger about the senseless deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others. And that so many of these deaths occurred at the hands of those we hold responsible for protecting us furthers this anger. These recent tragic events and the disproportional impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Black community are glaring signals that hatred, racism and discrimination continue to be a systemic problem in our society.
This is a time to reflect, a time to reinforce our connections with one another, a time to learn from one another, and most of all, a time to help drive change. VMS BioMarketing has a culture that values inclusion and diversity, but we can do more. For me personally that means using my network and platform to speak up and speak out. I want to hear from employees and work together on ways VMS can make a meaningful difference, and I am personally committed to driving discussions about actions we will take.
VMS exists to build real-human connections: to educate, empower, and help better the lives of others. Thus, it’s in our organization’s DNA to play a part in the change and we will. We will work to unite our VMS community, to empower each other to dismantle the inequalities that exist and help rebuild a society that is fair and just for all. A society that no longer has hatred, racism and discrimination rooted in it.
My personal view, and the view of our company, which I cannot stress enough: Black lives matter. They always have, and we want to ensure they always will. I hope that you all will join me in this period of reflection, learning and change.
